A true Reuben should condense on the tongue like the vapours of a sweet (but salty) meat elixir. The Reuben at Deli Jacks tried hard, but fell far short of my high expectations.
The sauerkraut was certainly fresh (since they ran out shortly before I arrived and had to get/make a new batch), and the rye bread was certainly good. But there just wasn't enough of either to satisfy my palate.
Perhaps it was the portion's size, which was definately on the small-side. Perhaps it was the slow service, which kept me waiting for 10 minutes. Perhaps it was just the overall experience that kept me from enjoying Deli Jacks. All I know for certain though, is that I will now return home to Montreal slightly disappointed in my Reuben experience.
Galahad's Cafe and Spirits
: Since I had never been to Galahad's before, I did not have any pre-conceived notion of how this experience was going to be. I'll therefore assume that the excellent service was a result of a good staff and not because of any previous visits or reviews. I will also assume that the helpful portions, the great bread, the good taste, and the excellent Reuben were all a result of a fine establishment trying to perfect the Reuben experience. Good job.
